Since skiing and snowboarding are weather-sensitive sports, numerous winter resorts are located in areas prone to suffer extreme weather conditions with very low temperatures. In fact, in many of these destinations in the United States, the records of the coldest temperatures compete with some of the icy areas on the planet.

1. Whiteface Mountain, New York

Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort (Lake Placid) in New York is one of the places where the lowest temperatures of all the Ski Resorts in the United States are recorded, including the Ayeska resort in Alaska.

During the 2022-2023 season, Whiteface dropped to -40.1º C (-40.2°F) at its summit, with a wind chill temperature of -68.3º C (-91°F). But this  is not the lowest temperature recorded in the history of the resort... In 2016, the summit experienced a wind chill temperature of -81.11º C! (-114 °F)...

2. Cannon Mountain, New Hampshire

The Cannon Mountain winter resort in New Hampshire has its slopes facing northeast, which means that the complex has just a few hours of sunshine per day. The north-facing orientation combined with the strong winds common in the area means that its minimum temperature record is nothing less than -38.3º C (-37 ° F), a data recorded two winters ago. 

3. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming could not be missing from the ranking. Although it is a famous place for many reasons in the world of winter sports, it has a good record of freezing temperatures. During the 2022-2023 ski season, the winter resort reached a minimum temperature of -36.11º C (-33°F) on the last day of January.

4. Loveland, Colorado

Loveland ski area in Colorado is located on the continental division, which makes extreme weather and common below-zero temperatures. In recent times, Loveland Ski Area has seen temperatures as low as -31.66º C (-25°F).

5. Jay Peak, Vermont

Jay Peak Ski Resort in Vermont is famous for its low temperatures and its skiing vast marked terrain. The top of the resort has reached temperatures so cold as -30.55º C (-23 ° F) in recent years. The mountain is located along a northeast-southwest line, which means that it is perpendicular to the cold northwest winds that the region often suffers during the winter months. The resort is often forced to close due to this wind.
